The United States maintains the highest incarceration rate of any nation in the world, with over half of the detained population being parents of children under the age of 18. In New York state, over 105,000 adolescents are affected by parental detention. ÂME (2022-present), is a project about youth whose parents have been imprisoned. By partnering with Children of Promise NYC, a community-centered organization based in Brooklyn, the work undertakes a long-form collaborative approach through visual education, giving agency to the children in representing their own stories. Guided by the narrative of the youth, the project aims to make visible the impacts on children and communities who are the hidden victims of mass incarceration in America.
